you rock. I read the long version. :)

I never knew you carried a recorder, tho as a writer it makes sense. Do you do it always, or just when you know you'll want to write about something later? (or is that a yes?)

Damn, you're good. Congratulations on the thousands of miles and thousands of dollars!

By the way, where is the Local Bike Shop from Hell? Inquiring minds want to make sure they stay far, far away from it ...

Actually, the microcassette recorder isn't so much associated with cycling as it is with major trips. The PMC travelogues are more of a subset of my "travel writing" than "cycling writing". I do big travelogues of most of my major trips, which usually includes the DZ Summit trips, whose 'logs are often several times bigger and more detailed than the PMC ones.

So the only real time I use the tape recorder while riding is on major expeditions like the PMC or the recent Mt. Hood expedition, when there are so many details that I want to be sure to capture in the travelogue. That's why I say that one day I ought to try to describe an actual ride itself, but I wouldn't do the PMC, because there's just too much other stuff going on at once.

I will say, however, that there are some moments of (mostly unintentional) high humor listening to the tapes.

Thanks! The riding's the easy and fun part, but the fundraising's definitely something that I'm proud to accomplish. It winds up being a lot of hours chasing people down, but it's really the only charitable thing I've ever done, and it's been very rewarding to ride for something that really matters to me.

The bike shop will be in separate email, as I don't care to post it publicly.
